Electronic City Card System

Electronic City Card System (SECAM)

SECAM is a central system designed to support electronic city cards, ticket sales, and transaction management in public transport. The solution has been deployed in production in Białystok and forms part of an integrated environment that works with, among other systems and devices, ticket vending machines, ticket validators, ticket inspection systems, onboard devices, sales terminals, passenger portals, passenger information systems, and other external systems.

The system was designed as a central component of an extensive transport ecosystem, enabling the integration and interoperability of multiple subsystems and solutions provided by different vendors.

As a result, SECAM can serve as a shared integration platform, ensuring consistent data flow and centralized management of processes related to ticket sales, city card services, and the registration and settlement of transactions.

Key Features of the SECAM System

  • Electronic city card management – registration of new cards, including support for security mechanisms, card activation, and ongoing management of cards assigned to passengers. The system automatically recognizes the card status and provides the appropriate set of available operations.
  • Contactless payment card support – card tokenization and the ability to assign fare concession entitlements for journeys based on the MTT/PaYG fare model (Smart Taryfa BKM).
  • Ticket sales – purchase of public transport products, including long-term tickets stored on the city card. Sales can be carried out both at stationary sales points and through mobile sales terminals, such as the Ingenico iCT250.
  • E-wallet support – topping up funds available on the card and using them to purchase products within the system.
  • Transaction history – access to information about operations performed on the card, as well as transactions related to ticket sales and top-ups.
  • Sales point management – management of sales points, including presentation of their balance and information about the card currently being serviced.
  • Sales confirmation generation – after completing a transaction, the system can generate and print a confirmation or receipt.
  • Fare and product configuration – a built-in module enables the definition and management of fare products available through individual sales channels.
  • User, operator, and device management – the system allows the management of operator structures and the assignment of users, sales points, and devices to individual operators.
  • Central transaction registration – SECAM collects and stores information about transactions carried out across the entire ticketing system, providing a single central source of data.
  • Sales through the passenger portal – SECAM integrates with the passenger portal (SDK), available at https://www.ekarta.bialystok.pl/ecard/. The service allows users to purchase season tickets, top up the e-wallet on their city card, and tokenize a contactless payment card. Users can also view transactions carried out using mobile ticket vending machines and validators, whether with a city card or a previously added and tokenized contactless payment card. The portal also enables users to submit complaints. A user manual for the portal is included in the materials available at the end of this description.
  • Integration with other transport systems – the solution works with, among other systems and devices, ticket vending machines, ticket validators, the Inspektor ticket inspection system, passenger information systems, depot and onboard devices, and terminal management systems.

A Single Environment for Multiple Sales and Passenger Service Channels

SECAM can serve as the central component integrating multiple sales channels, devices, and systems operating within the public transport ecosystem.

Thanks to this architecture, data related to cards, passengers, fare products, and transactions can be managed centrally, regardless of the channel through which a passenger makes a purchase, tops up funds, or uses transport services.

This ensures data consistency, easier management of a complex sales environment, and the ability to gradually expand the system with additional channels, devices, and services.

The solution described above is currently in production use in Białystok.

Merchant Portal

A system combining many of the functions described for SECAM, the eTicket Warehouse, and MTM was the Merchant Portal, a back-office solution developed as a subcontractor for APDU for a client in Lisbon, supporting sales operations and settlement processes.
The software allows the transport authority, Carris, to view payment transactions processed across the entire system, including individual taps and final charges, as well as manage the configuration of EMV terminals.
