Beesset co-develops fare payment system for Carris in Lisbon

In November 2025, a new MTT / Pay-as-You-Go fare payment system was launched in Lisbon, allowing Carris passengers to use contactless cards both as a means of payment and as a travel identifier. Beesset participated in the project as a subcontractor to APDU, responsible for developing the back-office portal – the Merchant Portal – supporting sales and settlement processes.

The new solution enables passengers to pay their fare directly on board the vehicle. All they need to do is tap a payment card, smartphone or smartwatch on the reader – with no need to purchase or print a ticket in advance.

The system also allows passengers to pay for several people at once. Before making the payment, a passenger can select on the device screen the number of people they wish to pay for.

One of the key features of the solution is that the payment instrument also serves as the travel identifier. Passengers do not receive a traditional ticket – information about the transaction and travel entitlement is handled electronically by the central system.

This model is becoming increasingly common in public transport systems across Europe and worldwide, where a payment card, smartphone or smartwatch simultaneously serves as a means of payment and a carrier of travel information.

✅ An international project involving several technology partners

The Carris system was developed in cooperation with several technology partners. APDU was responsible for the Tokenization & Transaction Gateway and the transport back-office system, with Beesset contributing to its implementation. The solution processes payment events in accordance with Visa and Mastercard requirements.

SIBS acts as the system’s acquiring partner, while the Portuguese company Card4B was responsible, among other things, for the application running on Ingenico Open1500 readers and for fare calculation mechanisms.

Beesset was responsible for developing the Merchant Portal – a back-office application supporting sales, transaction handling and settlement processes.

The delivered solution builds on our experience gained from previous payment and ticketing projects implemented for public transport in Poland. The system was designed to handle high transaction volumes and millions of journeys across Lisbon’s transport network.

Carris is one of Lisbon’s key public transport operators, operating buses as well as the city’s iconic trams.

Participating in this project was another opportunity for Beesset to apply our expertise in payment systems, transport back-office solutions and web applications supporting sales and settlements.

Previously, together with APDU, we had worked on public transport projects in cities including Kraków, Białystok, Grudziądz and Bielsko-Biała.

For us, the Lisbon implementation is another example of how competencies and solutions developed in Poland can successfully become part of large-scale international payment systems used in public transport.
