NV1 Electronic and Paper Ticket Validator

Among the many successful deployments of the NV1 validator, the largest project, both in terms of the number of devices, with more than 1,000 units, and the scope of functionality, was implemented in Białystok.

The version of the device used in this project supports, among other features, payments with contactless bank cards while simultaneously handling two fare models: KNF (Known Fare) and MTT/PaYG (Mass Transit Transaction / Pay As You Go).
The latter solution was branded by the Białystok Public Transport Authority as Smart Taryfa BKM. The operating logic of Smart Taryfa BKM is presented in a PIXEL video and is also explained in the Smart Taryfa BKM video available on this page.

Device Specifications

  • The NV1 validator is equipped with a 7-inch color capacitive touchscreen with a resolution of 1024 × 600 pixels,
  • Configurable RGB LEDs are positioned around the display and can be used to indicate, for example, transaction status,
  • Communication with the device can be established via Ethernet or RS485,
  • The device supports the installation of various contactless payment terminals, including PAX IM700, Verifone UX 410, Ingenico Open/1500, UIC680, and others,
  • The validator can be expanded and customized with a 2D/1D code scanner,
  • a beacon and a printer with a mechanical ticket cancellation function,
  • The validator measures 350 mm × 165 mm × 112 mm (height × width × depth),
  • The weight of the complete unit does not exceed 3 kg.

Technical Specifications and Current Certifications of the NV1 Validator

The offered validator is manufactured in cooperation with PIXEL, which is also its direct and exclusive distributor.

Device Features

Modularity:

  • Modular device design allowing different functions and components to be selected according to the customer’s needs and requirements, without the need to change the enclosure.

Payments:

  • Integration with the most popular payment terminals designed for contactless card payments, including PAX IM700, Verifone UX 410, Ingenico iUC160B, Ingenico Open/1500, UIC680, and others.
  • Support for Visa, Mastercard, and Maestro payment cards.
  • Contactless payments using smartphones, smartwatches, and other payment-enabled devices.
  • Support for city cards based on MIFARE, DESFire, Java Card, and FeliCa technologies.
  • Fare collection using various tariff models, including CICO (Check In/Check Out), Retail, Known Fare (a fixed fare charged per journey), and Mass Transit Transaction / Pay As You Go, where the optimal fare is calculated at the end of the settlement period, for example at the end of the day.

Additional Features:

  • Optional printer for validating paper tickets, including a mechanical ticket cancellation function and customizable print formats tailored to customer requirements.
  • Optional 2D/1D code scanner for registering journeys, discounts, and other functions.
  • Beacon support for fast and reliable identification of the vehicle service, as well as integration with mobile applications for transmitting current fare and route information.

Enclosure and Installation:

  • Vibration-, shock-, and impact-resistant enclosure made of durable plastic and secured with a lock.
  • The VDI 21 surface texture makes cleaning and disinfection easier while helping protect the enclosure against dirt.
  • Simple and fast validator installation and removal system.

Security:

  • Thanks to payment card data tokenization within the central MTM system, PA-DSS and PCI DSS certification is not required for the validator itself.
  • A built-in security component certified to Common Criteria EAL6+ enables secure card handling and communication, with support for dedicated security modules where required.

System Integration:

  • The validator can operate either autonomously or in connection with an onboard computer, including the PIXEL XC-6.
  • Hardware and software self-diagnostics support continuous and stable device operation.
  • The central MTM software integrated with the validator provides a wide range of functions, including device management and software updates, remote access to selected devices, creation of dedicated fare structures and sales interfaces, support for multiple language versions, distribution of advertisements and announcements, data analysis, dynamic calculation of the optimal fare according to the customer’s tariff model, integration with payment processing providers, electronic ticketing systems and passenger portals, as well as reporting.

Interface:

  • Operation via a 7-inch capacitive touchscreen.
  • Ergonomic, multilingual sales interface supporting fare payments, passenger information display, advertisements and announcements, as well as collection or preview of products purchased online.
  • Audio and visual notifications using multicolour RGB LEDs installed around the display.
  • Interface customization according to customer requirements and the needs of a specific project.

Like PIXEL mobile ticket vending machines, NV1 validators operate under the control of the central MTM software.

Key Features of the MTM Software

  • Registration of passenger journeys in Check In / Check Out mode.
  • Integration with electronic ticketing systems and passenger portals, including the ability to use a payment card as a carrier for a season ticket.
  • Processing of Visa, Mastercard, and Maestro payment card transactions using various payment models:

    • Mass Transit Transaction / Pay As You Go – calculation of the most favorable fare at the end of the settlement period, for example at the end of the day, based on all completed journeys.
  • Ability to define a wide range of fare structures, including stop-based, zone-based, distance-based, and time-based tariffs, as well as tariffs using recorded journey data such as the day of the week or check-in and check-out stops.
  • Integration with payment processing providers, including support for debt recovery processes.
  • Configuration of device interfaces, including screens, language versions, and audio announcements.
  • Management of advertisements and announcements displayed on device screens.
  • Beacon configuration.
  • Monitoring, diagnostics, and remote connectivity with selected devices.
  • Software updates for validators and ticket vending machines.
